Two-step truck washing, explained

An acidic pass followed by an alkaline pass, using the chemical reaction between them to lift road film and oxidation without the pressure that damages paint and decals.

Two-step washing applies an acidic product and then an alkaline product, in that order, and lets the reaction between them do the work that pressure would otherwise have to. It is the standard approach for commercial vehicles because it lifts road film and light oxidation off aluminum and painted surfaces without a brush and without high pressure.

How it runs

  1. Step one — acidic

    A low-pressure acidic application breaks the bond between road film and the surface, and begins lifting oxidation off aluminum. Dwell time is controlled: too short and it has not worked, too long and it etches.

  2. Step two — alkaline

    An alkaline detergent applied over the first step neutralises it and encapsulates the loosened soil so it rinses away rather than redepositing.

  3. Rinse

    A thorough rinse from the top down. Any residual acid keeps working after the crew leaves and will bloom back through the finish within weeks.

  4. Hand detail

    Grilles, bumpers, fuel tanks, wheels and behind mirrors, where a wand alone leaves shadows regardless of chemistry.

Why not just use more pressure

Because pressure damages what you are trying to protect. High pressure lifts decals at the edges, drives water past seals into connectors and bearings, and on older paint takes clear coat with it. It also drives contaminant into surface porosity rather than removing it.

Chemistry and dwell time do the same job without any of that, which is why a crew reaching for maximum pressure on every surface is a warning sign rather than a sign of thoroughness.
