What the Houston climate does to a fleet

Heat, humidity, salt, insect season and construction dust each attack a different part of a vehicle. What that means for wash intervals and chemistry through the year.

Houston is harder on a fleet than most of the country, and not for the reason people assume. It is not one severe season — it is five overlapping stressors that run most of the year.

The five stressors

  • Heat — bakes contaminant onto surfaces and shortens the working time of any chemistry applied to a hot panel, which is why summer washing starts early and works in shade where possible
  • Humidity — keeps road film damp against paint and aluminum, so the contact time between contaminant and surface is effectively continuous
  • Salt — carried inland well beyond the bay, driving corrosion into seams, fasteners and undercarriages
  • Insect season — nine months long, and bug residue is acidic; left on a front panel through a hot week it etches clear coat
  • Construction dust — the region is permanently under development, and lime-stabilised base material is mildly abrasive

Through the year

Spring and early summer are the worst combination — insect load peaks while heat is climbing, and the residue sets within days. Front panels, bumpers, mirrors and windscreens carry the damage, so this is the season where interval matters most.

Late summer adds thermal load: chemistry applied to a panel at surface temperatures well above ambient flashes off before it can work, which is a technique problem rather than a product problem. Autumn brings organic load from tree cover, and winter is mild enough that road treatment is rare — but on the few occasions it is applied, washing promptly afterwards matters more than the rest of the year combined.

What it means practically

Monthly washing is the Gulf Coast default rather than a premium option, and the units that benefit most are the ones running coastal or port routes. Undercarriage attention deserves its own interval here in a way it does not inland, because that is where salt-driven corrosion starts and where it stays hidden longest.
